Kids College?

How do you pay for your kids college expenses?

I don't have a lot of great answers for this one either. But I do know that Duke is now free to anyone who gets in and whose family makes less than $40,000! Read about it here. Oh yeah, and Harvard is now free for those who make under $60,000. Check it out here.

It appears that the less one makes, the more financial aid that is available.

Well, other than Harvard, Duke, and a handful of others, the less a person earns the more loans they have to take out to go to school.

That is not to say that there are not more and less affordable ways to do this. And there are grants and scholarships.

But, that said, your order may have to have some serious conversations about expectations around college. Members of the order may need to understand that even college is an area where living simply means doing without some things - like your first choice in colleges.

John,
You're right about college being a major point for reflection. The original proposal was intended to be simple without a lot of if/and/ors.

The reference to Duke and Harvard are a bit of hyperbole, particularly, hyperbole for those who bring this up here at Duke (I'm a Duke Div School Student as are all those who have been meeting thus far).

One thing I have noticed while being here at Duke is that when my wife and I apply for student aid, the less we make, the more we seem to be eligible for (particularly subsidized loans).

And you're right about what school one chooses to go to (not to mention what one's children are expected to pay of that schooling). IUPUI (Indiana University Purdue University of Indiana...I grew up in Indy) was a mere $97/credit hour when I took a class there back in 1996. I'm sure its more now but still significantly less than Duke's $47,000 a year for undergrad! (A bit more hyperbole!)
